In 2009, Healy State School was proud to have several students selected to represent Mount Isa and the North Western District in championship sports.
The North Western School Sport Board (NWSSB) consists of a group of interested teachers and community personnel who administer school sport initiatives in the North West of our state.
The Board consists of the Regional School Sports Officer, one Department of Sport Representative, a QCPCA member, the School Sport Project Officer (Vacant), delegate from Special Education, Executive Director (Longreach), Community Liaison Officer (Mount Isa) and four delegates from each of our four sporting district (Mount Isa, Gulf, Central West, Mid-West). These delegates comprise Principal and teacher members from both primary and secondary backgrounds.
The Regional School Sports Board meets three times per year, two face to face and one teleconference. The face to face meetings are held in Julia Creek/Mount Isa with delegates traveling from the four districts prior to the official meeting on Saturday.
The teleconferences can have up to ten stations with delegates attending from their home base. The teleconference currently links up Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Richmond, Normanton, Burketown, Mornington Island, Doomadgee, Julia Creek, Barcaldine, Hughenden, and Alpha to the centre base of Longreach. Where emergency decisions have to be made, the executive meets to make the decision that is then ratified at the next full meeting.
The objectives of the Sports Board are no different to the other eleven regions of the state, ie. to promote school sport, facilitate maximum participation of students and improve opportunities for students to participate in activities to which they would not normally have access. As well, the Board encourages students to achieve by participation in district, regional, intra and inter state exchanges.
Currently our region participates in eight secondary and eight primary sports sending approximately 280 students away to state level competition per year.
One idiosyncrasy of our region is the distance between centres for district / regional carnivals. To participate in a one day carnival, three days are generally required, two of which are allocated for traveling. Travel to Intra State Carnivals, also requires two days either side of the carnival to complete travel requirements. This for some of our students can require up to 30 hours on the coach just to play. The above puts additional strain on schools / districts in regards to teacher release and student absence from our schools.
We believe our School Sport Board provides a quality program operating under the severe constraints imposed upon us by our geographical uniqueness.
